Marshall Islands Here’s a possible tipping point. The government of the Marshall Islands has announced plans to issue the world’s first national cryptocurrency. The islands’ parliament passed into law at end-February a declaration that its new currency, the Sovereign (SOV), will be distributed and exchanged as a digital coin (until now, the Islands have used the US dollar, which will continue to circulate alongside the Sovereign). Initial issue of the Sovereign will be via an ICO provisionally scheduled for later this year. Marshall Islands president Hilda Heine says: “This is a historic moment for our people, finally issuing and using our own currency alongside the USD.
