Conversations on the roller-coaster

Ron Quaranta, chairman, Wall Street Blockchain Alliance, and a prominent advocate of innovation in finance, spoke to William Essex about the present and future impact of blockchain on finance in general and FX in particular.

William Essex: Please summarise Wall Street’s progress towards blockchain/DLT adoption to date. To ask again a question posed at Blockchain for Wall Street 2017, will 2018 be the year of the blockchain pilot in financial services? Ron Quaranta: I’d say that we are reaching the top of the education curve. We no longer have the conversations around “What is blockchain?” and “What is DLT and does it have a place?” While there still are the unconverted, there is a wide acceptance that the underlying technology of blockchain really can be useful across the landscape – everything from optimising clearing and settlement to revealing the opportunity for new asset classes, to compressing settlement cycles, and even to minimising counterparty risk. We’ve gone beyond concepts and pilots, into potentially production-ready systems.
